With so many different options for flooring, it is often difficult to pick out the right type of material. We'll walk you through the various types of flooring material and the different applications, the pros and cons of each so that you can make a decision based on your use-case.
Carpet has been a staple in many households. The soft material provides a nice soft feeling for our feet and elicits a warmer atmosphere when compared to hard floors. There are various textures, patterns, and padding thicknesses that can be selected. While we believe carpet provides the highest level of comfort, it can be one of the most difficult flooring options to maintain, especially if you have pets or children. They are subject to stains and retain odors if an accident or spill is not addressed easily. It also hides dirt/dust particles, that can get trapped between the fibers. Carpet is generally best for bedrooms, home offices, and potentially living rooms, depending on your preferred level of maintenance and circumstance (i.e. kids/pets).
Luxury Vinyl Planks (aka Luxury Vinyl Tiles - LVT) have quickly become a standard in today's homes. Due to their waterproof quality, easy maintenance, appealing wood-like look, and cheaper alternative than other types of material, LVP's are a high-end alternative to traditional hardwood. They have been gaining in popularity because they can mimic the look and feel of other materials with their sophisticated textures, colors or shapes that can accommodate many different tastes! There are multiple layers in an LVP plank, but most notable is its vinyl core, which is characterized by its durable, yet flexible quality.
There's a reason LVP's have become widely used in today's new construction homes. It offers a great blend of durability and comfort. Ideal for common areas in the home, even in kitchens or bathrooms given their waterproof characteristic.
Solid Polymer Core (aka Stone Polymer Core) is similar to LVP's in that they have multiple layers and are generally a cheaper alternative to other materials like hardwood, tile, and stone. However, unlike LVP, the core material in SPC planks is a blend of plastic and compressed limestone powder. This provides a more rigid layer than the LVP alternative, which usually translates to higher durability and thus, a longer lifespan. The downside of this is that there is not as much flex in the material, which means comfort is reduced when compared to LVP.
SPC's make for great floors in both residential and commercial settings. If you are expecting high foot traffic, SPC would be the logical choice for increased protection, rigidity, and lifespan. While typically slightly more costly than LVP, it is still relatively cheaper than traditional hardwood flooring.
